Coffee Chat: Kat’s Take on CoCapsules’ Buying Process

Behind-the-scenes, over coffee — real conversations about style, shopping, and the people who make it happen.

Every other Thursday at 10:30 a.m., we grab our lattes and go live on Instagram for Coffee Chats — our casual, candid conversations between CoCapsules founders (that’s us, Syd and Jenn). Sometimes it’s just the two of us catching up on what’s happening behind the racks, and sometimes we invite guests — like fellow business owners, community members, or in this case, our amazing intern, Kat.

This week’s chat was fueled by our friends and neighbors at Ohh…macarons, who keep us caffeinated and conversational. We sat down with Kat, a business student from UW Bothell, to hear about her first few weeks at CoCapsules and what she’s learned from watching our buying process up close.

Kat joined us just a few weeks ago, and her very first day happened to be a buying appointment — basically the “draft day” of fashion. She showed up half an hour before it started, no prep, and got a crash course in how we select every piece that ends up in our store or on our site.

“I’ve experienced two buying appointments now,” Kat shared. “It’s not just picking clothes. You guys talk about fit, fabric, stitching, body types, lifestyles… it’s like every piece has to earn its place. I realized how much education and expertise goes into every single thing that ends up here.”

That’s exactly what we want people to see: buying at CoCapsules isn’t about filling racks — it’s about curating for real life.

Why We Don’t Go to Market

Most brands travel to markets (think: fashion’s version of a giant mall) to buy several seasons at once. We don’t.
Instead, we invite our brand reps to us. It’s more intentional, more personal, and way less chaotic.

“Going to market is like saying, ‘just go to the mall and see what you find,’” Sydney explained. “That’s not how we shop for our customers. It’s expensive, time-consuming, and just not aligned with how we want to run our business.”

Buying appointments happen in our studio, one at a time, so we can take our time — usually an hour or more per brand — to analyze fit, fabric, versatility, and who each piece will serve best.

Real Bodies, Real Fits

One of the things that surprised Kat most was how interactive our buying process is.

“I tried things on my first day,” Kat laughed. “You, Jen, me — we all tried on the same top and it looked great on everyone, just in different ways. That’s when I understood how you pick clothes for every body.”

We talk a lot about fit at CoCapsules, because even pieces that look similar on a hanger can behave totally differently once they’re on a body. That’s why our membership model works so well — it’s not just personal styling, it’s personal buying.

“You’re Shopping with Real People, Not an Algorithm”

Each buying appointment sparks conversations about our members.
We’ll say things like, “Oh, this would be perfect for Julie’s work trip,” or “This fabric would be great for new moms who want comfort without sacrificing style.”

“It’s like having a personal shopper built into your membership,” Kat noted. “You’re getting clothes hand-selected for you by people who actually know you.”

Exactly. We’re not just thinking about what’s trending — we’re thinking about where you’ll be in six months.

Sneak Peek: What’s Coming for Spring

Kat’s favorite takeaway from our spring buying preview? Matching sets.

“Everyone loves a good set — it makes getting dressed easy but still put-together,” she said.

Expect elevated sets, easy-care fabrics, and a few standout pieces that look beautiful across different body types — like the white linen vest top that won everyone over.

We’ll bring in higher quantities of pieces like that — versatile, flattering, and durable — while keeping other styles in limited runs so every wardrobe still feels uniquely yours.

Final Sip

“Even just shopping here, you’re getting styled,” Kat said. “Because everything’s been thought through for real people.”

And that’s really what makes CoCapsules different. From the first buying appointment to the moment you walk out the door (or click checkout), every detail is considered with you in mind.

So whether you’re local or shopping online, know this: every piece was chosen with intention — by people who care about how it feels, fits, and functions in your life.
